<\/a><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/div>\nThe Lupot family had roots in Mirecourt in the mid-seventeenth century, and may even have extended back to the sixteenth century Lupo violinmakers of London and the Netherlands. Nicolas\u2019 father Francois was born in Plombieres, but took an appointment as violin maker to the Duke of Wurttemberg in Stuttgart. Nicolas trained there with his father, but began a working partnership with Francois Pique of Paris in around 1792. Lupot moved to Paris himself in 1794, and was quickly established as the leading maker there. His brother Francois joined him and became one of the foremost bowmakers of Paris, and his assistants Charles Francois Gand and Auguste Bernardel went on to found another leading\u00a0Paris atelier.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lupot\u00a0paved\u00a0the way for the\u00a0work\u00a0of J.B.Vuillaume, the\u00a0best-known\u00a0and most\u00a0successful\u00a0makers\u00a0of his time. His style is based on\u00a0enlightened\u00a0re-examination\u00a0of the\u00a0work\u00a0of the old masters, and in\u00a0particular\u00a0a\u00a0deep\u00a0understanding and\u00a0appreciation\u00a0of the\u00a0work\u00a0of Antonio\u00a0Stradivari, up\u00a0until\u00a0that\u00a0point\u00a0still\u00a0somewhat\u00a0swamped\u00a0by the\u00a0popularity\u00a0of\u00a0bulbous-arched\u00a0Staines\u00a0imitations\u00a0throughout\u00a0Northern\u00a0Europe.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lupot\u2019s\u00a0cellos\u00a0are rare,\u00a0which\u00a0makes\u00a0this\u00a0example, in an\u00a0almost\u00a0unequalled\u00a0state of\u00a0preservation, all the more\u00a0significant.\u00a0Lupot\u00a0followed\u00a0Stradivari\u2019s\u00a0perfectionist\u00a0workmanship\u00a0devotedly, and\u00a0this\u00a0cello is\u00a0built\u00a0on the most\u00a0famous\u00a0of the master’s cello\u00a0models,\u00a0designated\u00a0the \u2019Forma B\u2019 by\u00a0Stradivari\u00a0himself.\u00a0Certain\u00a0touches are Lupot\u2019s own, the\u00a0slightly\u00a0exaggerated\u00a0turn of the\u00a0purfling\u00a0mitres\u00a0in the\u00a0corners, and an\u00a0increased\u00a0fullness\u00a0in the\u00a0breadth\u00a0of the\u00a0arch\u00a0across\u00a0the\u00a0centre\u00a0of the instrument,\u00a0showing\u00a0Lupot\u2019s\u00a0conscious\u00a0effort\u00a0not just to\u00a0duplicate, but to\u00a0improve,\u00a0both\u00a0aesthetically\u00a0and\u00a0tonally, on the\u00a0work\u00a0of the maestro\u00a0Stradivari. The return to\u00a0precision\u00a0and\u00a0care\u00a0in\u00a0construction, and his\u00a0farsighted\u00a0recognition\u00a0of Stradivari\u2019s\u00a0superiority\u00a0are Lupot\u2019s\u00a0legacy\u00a0to the\u00a0makers\u00a0of Paris, and\u00a0ultimately\u00a0to all\u00a0modern\u00a0luthiers.<\/p><\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
