Ugo Rondinone (b 1963) was born in Switzerland and studied at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, Austria. In recent years he has lived and worked in both New York and Zurich. Aside from having solo exhibitions, among other places in Kunsthalle in Vienna, Museo de Art Contemporaneo in Leon, Spain, Louisiana Museum of Modern Art just outside of Copenhagen, and the SculptureCenter in New York, Rondinone represented Switzerland at the Venice Biennial in 2007. In addition, he has participated in numerous group exhibitions.

Rondinone works in many different mediums and techniques, but has largely concentrated on sculpture in the broadest definition of the medium. He alternates between small and large formats, from unassuming and odd cast bronze mandarins, apples and potatoes, for example, to enormous casts of trees, or doorways, which the monumental work All absolute abyss is a characteristic example of.
